Electrical Supplies & Tools

Electrical supply is a category that does not tolerate approximation. The difference between one conductor size and the next, or between a breaker and something that looks similar, is not a difference in quality but in safety — so we work this category to numeric specification rather than general description.

Numeric specification, not general description

A request for "electrical cable" is not a request that can be priced. Cable is defined by core count, conductor size, insulation type, voltage rating, and whether it is armoured or flame-retardant. Each of those changes both price and application fundamentally.

The same logic applies to breakers: rated current, breaking capacity, pole count, tripping curve. A breaker with insufficient breaking capacity may operate normally for years and then fail at the single moment it was required to work.

So we ask for the full specification — or, if you tell us the load and the application, we propose one. The proposal is set out in the quotation with its reasoning, so your technician can review it before anything is supplied.

Cables and terminations

Cables across conductor sizes and insulation types, armoured cable for buried or exposed routes, and control and signal cable. Alongside these, glands and lugs, conduit, flexible conduit and cable containment.

A frequently neglected item is the termination. Connecting a large-section cable through an unsuitable lug creates a high-resistance point that heats continuously — one of the most common causes of panel failure, and among the hardest to diagnose because it only appears under load.

Panel components

Breakers of all types, contactors, overload protection, relays, empty distribution enclosures, busbars, and assembly materials including trunking, terminals and numbering.

Numbering in particular is a trivial, cheap item that saves considerable time later. A numbered, documented panel can be maintained quickly; an unnumbered one requires manual tracing at every intervention — a recurring cost against a one-off saving.

Lighting

Industrial, office and external luminaires, emergency lighting units, floodlights and mounting accessories. Selection depends on the required light level, mounting height, and environmental conditions — humidity, dust, heat — which determine the ingress protection (IP) rating needed.

A luminaire with an inadequate IP rating in an industrial environment will fail within months. Saving on this line shows up quickly in repeat replacement cost and in the labour time needed to reach high mounting points.

Tools

Measuring instruments including multimeters, clamp meters and insulation testers; insulated installation tools; and cable cutting and crimping tools. Insulated tools are a safety item rather than a luxury when work happens near live circuits.

Because ALKAYAN also performs electrical work, tool and material selection is grounded in actual use rather than a catalogue listing — a difference that shows in how well what we propose suits field conditions.

Conformity and source of supply

Electrical supply is a category with a real gap between a product that meets specification and one that merely appears to. Cable printed with a conductor size that does not match its actual section, or a breaker that does not achieve its stated breaking capacity, cannot be identified by inspection.

So we treat this category slightly differently from others: the source of supply is part of the specification rather than an incidental detail. Where it materially matters, the quotation states what is being supplied and from where, so your technician has something to base a decision on.

And when a lower-cost alternative is requested we set out exactly where the difference sits — in conductor size, insulation type or expected life — because economising on an electrical line is sometimes entirely reasonable and sometimes not acceptable at all, and the distinction is technical rather than commercial.

Quantities and drum lengths

Cable is sold on drums in standard lengths, and requesting a non-standard length can mean cutting a full drum and carrying the balance on the order. Knowing that in advance sometimes changes the decision: taking the full standard length can work out cheaper than cutting part of one.

The quotation sets out the available lengths and the cost difference between options, because this is a detail that rarely appears in a request but affects the final figure noticeably on larger orders.

Frequently asked

What if we don't know the exact specification?

Send the load, the application, the run length and the environmental conditions, and we propose a suitable specification with the reasoning set out in the quotation, so your technician can review it before supply.

Does electrical supply include installation?

You can take supply only, or supply with installation under our electrical works service. The advantage of the latter is that what arrives is what the technician who surveyed the site specified against actual loads.

Can you supply specific IP ratings for harsh environments?

Yes. The ingress protection rating is set against the environment — humidity, dust or heat — and stated explicitly in the quotation, because an inadequate rating is a common cause of repeat replacement.
